The pre-conditioner ensures the mixing and preconditioning of materials inside the cylinder, effectively improving the pre-gelatinization of the materials. There are two common types of conditioners: single-shaft pre-conditioner and double-shaft type, and sometimes they can be combined for specific needs.
This type of pre-conditioner has a relatively simple structure with a cylindrical shell containing a stirring shaft. The shaft is equipped with multiple adjustable and replaceable paddles.
During operation, the powdered feed particles move in two directions under the agitation of the paddles. First, they rotate around the shaft, and second, they move along the axial direction, following a trajectory similar to a spiral. Typically, a single-shaft paddle conditioner is around 2-3 meters long, allowing the feed particles to stay inside the pre-conditioner for 20-30 seconds, reaching a preconditioning degree of about 20%. This setup can generally meet the preconditioning requirements for some regular pellet feed.
The double-shaft variable-diameter differential-speed paddle pre-conditioner, also known as the DDC pre-conditioner, is developed based on the single-shaft paddle pre-conditioner. Under the action of the paddles, the powdered feed exhibits a partial movement trajectory in the shape of "8", rotating around the shaft and advancing forward. This greatly increases the length of the movement path, allowing for a greater range of adjustable axial movement speed of the feed. A typical conditioner with a length of around 2 meters can control the conditioning time between several tens of seconds and 240 seconds, meeting the requirements for special pellet feeds with high preconditioning and sterilization rates. The preconditioning degree can typically reach 50-60%. Additionally, the paddles with higher relative motion can "cleanse" each other, providing the high self-cleaning ability. This results in an improvement in the feed's residual
phenomenon inside the pre-conditioner.

The two-way and three-way pre-conditioners are used to extend and control the retention time of the powdered feed in the pre-conditioner. They are achieved by stacking 2-3 standard single-shaft paddle pre-conditioners above the extruder. The two-way and three-way multi-layer pre-conditioners are also known as dual-pass and triple-pass type. These pre-conditioners are characterized by being connected in series with multiple steam injection points. During operation, the powdered feed passes through each pre-conditioner in sequence, effectively prolonging the conditioning time and allowing better contact and mixing between the materials and steam. This setup can increase the preconditioning degree of the feed to around 40%.
In order to prolong and control the residence time of the powder in the conditioner, a single-shaft paddle-type conditioner combined with a double-shaft different-diameter and differential-speed paddle-type conditioner are stacked above the extruder.
This kind of conditioner is characterized by being connected in series with multiple steam injection ports. During operation, the powder passes through two conditioners in turn, which prolongs the conditioning time. The material and steam can be more fully contacted and mixed, and the maturity of the powder can be increased to about 50%. Thus this type of pre-conditioner is suitable for large-scale production lines.
